- Meet Our 2017-2018 Board -

Our Board is comprised of elected and appointed officers.

Lisa Shkoda, RDN, CNSC, CSP, FAND
Originally from Ukraine, Lisa completed her undergraduate work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her dietetic internship at the University of Virginia Health System. Shortly after becoming a Registered Dietitian, she received Specialist in Pediatrics and Nutrition Support Clinician credentials. Lisa was the founding dietitian of the UVA Ketogenic Diet Therapy Program for Epilepsy. After developing the program, she has utilized ketogenic diets to treat seizures in kids and adults for three years, presented at international conferences and was invited to train nearly thirty neurologists in Kazakhstan. Currently, Lisa is an oncology dietitian at the UVA Cancer Center. She has served in multiple leadership roles with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics on the national, state and local levels. Lisa was recognized with a Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics credential. She loves that BRAND creates a sense of a local community within our profession. She appreciates the diverse and unique perspectives that every member brings to our organization.

Lemma Brown, MS, RDN
President Elect
Lemma Brown, MS, RDN has worked in the nutrition field for over seven years. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Nutrition and Foods from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia and fulfilled both her supervised practice dietetic internship and her Master of Science in Nutrition degree from Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She has worked in a wide range of clinical settings in West Virginia, North Carolina, and Virginia. She has enjoyed her move to outpatient nutrition and counseling with the bariatric surgery program at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia over the past two years. Lemma enjoys working with and getting to know more like-minded fellow nutrition professionals within the Blue Ridge community, and she is happy that being part of the BRAND Board fulfills this outlet.

Linda LaFontaine, RDN

Diana Lehner-Gulotta, RDN, CNSC
Diana graduated with Highest Distinction in May 2015 with a Bachelor's of Science in Dietetics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A Wisconsin native, Diana then traveled to Charlottesville, Virginia to complete her dietetic internship at the University of Virginia Health System. Shortly after passing the Registration Examination for Dietitian Nutritionists in July 2016, she joined the team at UVA as an RD, providing nutritional care to both adult and pediatric patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings, as well as at Continuum Home Health. Diana recently passed the examination for Certified Nutrition Support Clinicians in May 2017 and took on a new role as a ketogenic and neurology dietitian. Diana is excited to be able to network with so many interesting and unique individuals as the BRAND Secretary. In addition to nutrition, Diana enjoys swing dancing, singing, acting, hiking, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

Angie Hasemann, MS, RDN, CSP
Legislative Chair
Angie Hasemann is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Specialist in Pediatrics who has spent the majority of her career working with kiddos at the University of Virginia Health System’s Children’s Fitness Clinic. Although she transitioned out of the clinic in 2015, she still enjoys developing creative teaching strategies and soaking up the interesting family dynamics when she covers in Pediatric Endocrinology. She currently supports UVA’s outpatient and pediatric RD teams in her role as Co-Clinical Nutrition Manager, as well as serving as Program Director of the University of Virginia Health System Dietetic Internship program. She’s a true foodie at heart – enjoying cooking, trying out new restaurants, and doing a food tour in any new city she visits.

Debbie Dunn-Frederick, MS, RD

Debbie is currently a full-time instructor at the Health and Human Sciences Department of Bridgewater College, where she teaches Nutritional Sciences and Family and Consumer Sciences courses. She advises over 25 students in this field, and she has been employed at Bridgewater College for 9 years. Debbie has been a nutrition professional for 32 years, working in clinical nutrition at various area hospitals, private practice nutrition consulting for health centers, long term care centers, and physicians offices. What she loves most about serving in a BRAND leadership role is the ability to meet and work with many other interesting dietitians and professionals in the area. Debbie enjoys leadership roles, and she finds the experience of networking at meetings to be crucial for nutrition students, as well as herself and other dietitians.

Devon Golem, PhD, RDN
Nominating Committee
Dr. Devon Golem is the founder of the Institute of Continuing Education for Nutrition Professionals ( She is originally from California where she became an RD in 2003. She earned her PhD in Nutritional Science with an emphasis in Exercise Science at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. She has professional experience as a clinician, researcher, and educator. Devon is the former DPD Director of the dietetics program at New Mexico State University, and she currently works as an accreditation consultant for dietetic and supervised programs in the field. Devon serves as a member of the Nominating Committee for BRAND, the Professional Education Chair for VAND, and the Virginia State Coordinator of the Vegetarian Nutrition DPG. She and her husband are soon-to-be parents and are expecting in November 2017.

Lucy Gettle, RDN, CNSC
Nominating Committee
Lucy graduated from Penn State University with a double major in Nutritional Sciences and Hospitality Management. She completed her dietetic internship at the University of Virginia Medical Center and has been an RDN for the past two years. She works in both inpatient and outpatient settings primarily with adult cystic fibrosis and cardiac rehab patients. Lucy is currently working on her M.S. in Nutrition and Dietetics with a focus in integrative and functional medicine and nutrition through the University of Kansas. She believes in the power of food and nutrition as instruments of health, joy and wellness, and is passionate about using this information to help others live a better life. Serving on the BRAND Board has been a great opportunity for Lucy to meet RDs of diverse practices from all around the Blue Ridge, and she loves being able to learn from others and work together to support the growth of the profession.

Tonya Price, MS, RDN
Communications Committee Chair
Tonya is excited to serve on the BRAND board as your Communications Committee Chair. She feels that participating in leadership within BRAND is a great way to network with other dietitians as well as give back to the profession. Tonya graduated from Virginia Tech with her BS in Human Nutrition & Foods and completed her internship at their Roanoke/Blacksburg site. Her MS degree is from James Madison University in Health Sciences with a concentration in Dietetics. Currently she is in her dissertation year of the A. T. Still University's doctorate in health education program. Tonya has the pleasure of being a full-time instructor in Lynchburg College's Health Promotion and MPH program. She has worked in the field of nutrition and dietetics for 21 years and has been an RD for 19 years. Tonya is looking forward to continuing to work in higher education.

Elizabeth Newton, RDN, CSOWM
Communications Committee
Elizabeth is a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Specialist in Obesity and Weight Management. She has a BA in Psychology from the University of Virginia, as well as a BS in Dietetics from James Madison University. She completed her dietetic internship at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in May 2013. Over the past four years of practice as a dietitian, Elizabeth has worked in both inpatient and outpatient settings. In her current role, she specializes in weight management at the University of Virginia Health System, working at both the bariatric surgery clinic and the Northridge Nutrition Counseling Center. Elizabeth loves being on the BRAND Board because she gets to interact with so many fabulous nutrition professionals, and she has a passion for promoting nutrition for a happy, healthy life within the community.

Austin Shelly, RD, CNSC
Communications Committee
Austin received her Bachelors in Nutrition and Food Science from Georgia Southern University and completed her internship at the UVA Health System in 2012. She previously worked in acute care with GI, surgery, and abdominal transplant patients, but she has been at the outpatient UVA Nutrition Counseling Center for two years now. BRAND provides an opportunity for Austin to connect with other nutrition professionals that she otherwise would not know! It’s her first year on the board and she is already very excited about further involvement with the profession on both a local and a state level. It gives her a chance to have a role outside of her day-to-day job, but still within the profession.

Rita Smith, MS, RD, CDE
Bylaws Chair
Rita Smith, RD, CDE has worked with continued enthusiasm in the field of nutrition and disease prevention for over 40 years. Currently she providing nutrition counseling as the Community Outpatient Dietitian for Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital. Committed to being a reasonable sensible voice in nutrition for the Charlottesville-Albemarle community, Rita discusses timely nutrition topics on both TV and radio each week. Rita has been involved with both VAND and BRAND for most of her professional life, enjoying the friendships that have developed with the other RDs. By serving on the VAND and BRAND Boards, she appreciates the opportunity to be involved in making policies and promoting activities that have a positive impact for Virginia dietitians.

Eva Delaney, RDN, CNSC
Professional Recognition Committee Chair
Eva Delaney, RDN, CNSC obtained her BS in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise at Virginia Tech and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Virginia Health System. She has worked as a Clinical Pediatric Dietitian for the UVA Children’s Hospital since July 2014, and her areas of specialization include NICU nutrition, tube feeding management, pediatric feeding disorders and pediatric/adolescent eating disorders. In addition to serving as the Professional Recognition Committee Chair for BRAND, she is also the President of the Virginia Neonatal Nutrition Association where she works to promote education for neonatal and infant nutrition. Eva loves working with children and their families and witnessing how improved nutrition can positively impact so many other parts of a child’s life!

Amanda Crane, RDN
Professional Recognition Committee
Amanda has worked for the past two years as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist in the outpatient setting at the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital with the department of Pediatric Endocrinology and is specialized in pediatric weight management and diabetes. Amanda’s training includes successful completion of a certificate of training in Pediatric Weight Management, a dietetic internship at the University of Virginia Health System and a Bachelor of Science from the University of New Hampshire. One of Amanda’s favorite parts about her role on the BRAND board is being able to collaborate with so many established and experienced nutrition professionals.

Amanda Terillo, MS, RD
Professional Recognition Committee
Amanda Terillo is a private practice dietitian. She did her undergraduate work in New York, and her dietetic internship at the University of Maryland College Park. After living in Washington D.C. for several years she became passionate about the food system and how it affects our work as Dietitians. She then went on to obtain her masters in Sustainable Food Systems. She now has private practice where she specializes in integrative and functional nutrition where she works to find the root cause of her clients symptoms and incorporates mind body practices. During her free time she works in her garden, hike and takes care of her bees, chickens and three pot bellied pigs.

Dana Henry, RDN
Scholarship/Awards Chair
Dana Henry, RDN is a clinical dietitian at the University of Virginia Health System. After completing undergraduate coursework at Miami University, she matched with the University of Virginia Health System Dietetic Internship. Following graduation, Dana joined the staff at UVA as an inpatient dietitian. During her seven years as a dietitian, she has covered a wide variety of specialty areas including cardiology, maternal health, neurology, neurosurgery, NICU and cardiology. Currently, Dana serves as the Assistant Dietetic Internship Director, where she oversees the health system's 12 dietetic interns. She also works in the department of Maternal Fetal Medicine where she provides nutrition counseling to patients before, during and after pregnancy. Dana's involvement with the BRAND board started immediately after completing her internship. The opportunity to take on a leadership role allowed her to connect with other district and state level dietitians with similar passions and interests.

Monica Hershey, RDN
Newsletter Editor
Monica Hershey is your 2017-2018 BRAND Newsletter Editor! She attended Penn State University for her undergrad and did her dietetic internship at UVA from 2015-2016. She was hired on immediately following the completion of her internship as one of the inpatient RDs at UVA. She sees a mix of digestive health, surgery, urology and psych patients, and she is also the RD for the outpatient HIV clinic. She has been working at UVA for a little over 1 year now, and loves her role and the people she gets to work with. The thing she loves most about serving in a BRAND leadership role is the opportunity to meet so many fabulous and hard-working nutrition professionals!

Molly Bremer, MS
Intern Liason
Molly Bremer, MS, is a University of Virginia Health Systems Dietetic Intern. She completed both her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise. She is excited to meet with the other dietitians in the BRAND area during meetings and events. Molly is also looking forward to attending BRAND meetings and learning more about policy changes and opportunities.

Megan Wine
Student Liason (JMU)
Megan Wine is a senior at James Madison University finishing up her B.S. degree and DPD program in Dietetics. Megan plans to graduate in May and then pursue an internship to become a clinical Registered Dietitian. Nutrition and health have always been passions of Megan's and she is excited to become part of such an amazing field and make a difference everyday. On campus, she is heavily involved in the JMU Dietetics Association, where she is currently the secretary, and BRAND where she serves as the student liaison. Her favorite part of being on the BRAND board is having the opportunity to work alongside a team of experienced dietitians with varying backgrounds.
