VAND 2022 Scholarships

VIRGINIA ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000)

VAND recognizes the value to the profession of the increase in knowledge base and experience of its members. Therefore, in support of this philosophy, VAND awards a graduate scholarship to help a member work toward an advanced degree. To be eligible for the Graduate Scholarship, a candidate must:

  1. Have been a member of the VAND for at least one (1) year.
  2. Be a resident of Virginia at the time of application.
  3. Have been accepted into a graduate study program at the time the award is presented and plan to complete at least two (2) courses per academic year as a part‐time student or enroll the minimum hours specified by the institution as a full‐time student.


VIRGINIA ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS MARGARET MACDONALD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($1,000)

The VAND established The Margaret MacDonald Memorial Scholarship to honor a member, Miss Margaret MacDonald, following her untimely death in 1948. Miss Margaret MacDonald was an honor student in college, completed her internship at the Medical College of Virginia, and was Head Dietitian at St. Luke’s Hospital in Richmond. Prior to her fatal illness, she had been active in dietetic affairs and her death ended a promising professional career. The scholarship, originally established as a loan, was changed in 1951 to a gift scholarship in the amount specified in the annual budget. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement and promise of excellence in the profession of dietetics.

To be eligible to receive this scholarship, a candidate must:

  1. Be a graduate (or in final semester of program) of a Virginia college or university, at the time of award.
  2. Be eligible for a dietetic internship or other approved supervised practice program.


VIRGINIA ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD ($500)

The Joan Dobek Harrell Professional Development Award was originally established by Ross Laboratories, a Division of Abbott Laboratories, to support a member’s attendance at a continuing education event. The honorarium has been named in honor of a VAND member, Joan Dobek Harrell, RD, following her untimely death in 1985. Joan Dobek Harrell was an active member of the VAND and was a representative for Ross Laboratories. To be eligible to receive one of these awards, the applicant must:

  1. Have been a member of the VAND for at least one (1) year.
  2. Be a resident of Virginia at the time of application.
  3. Be actively employed or an active volunteer in the field of nutrition/dietetics.


VIRGINIA ACADEMY OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS THE CAROLYN J. REIVER ENTREPRENEURIAL GRANT ($500)

The Blue Ridge Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (BRAND) established the Carolyn J. Reiver Entrepreneurial Grant, a grant to honor Carolyn J. Reiver, RD, a dietitian in the Blue Ridge District who spent countless hours working to improve the dietetics profession at both the local and state levels. From the request of Carolyn J. Reiver, a grant has been established in her name to provide funding for the development of a creative new project or entrepreneurial focus to a member of the Virginia Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (VAND). The honorarium, in the amount of $500.00, will be presented annually at the VAND Annual Meeting.

To be eligible to receive this award, the applicant must:

  1. Have been an active member of VAND for at least one year.
  2. Be a resident of Virginia at the time of application.
  3. Be actively employed or volunteer in the field of nutrition and dietetics.
